Ayo Edebiri hosted Saturday Night Live but made a cameo during the cold open to confront Nikki Haley.
The Bear star made an early appearance and asked the Republican candidate if slavery was the cause of the Civil War.
“I was just curious, what would you say was the main cause of the Civil War, and do you think it starts with an s and ends with a lavery?” Edebiri asked.
Haley responded, “Yep, I probably should’ve said that the first time.”
The presidential hopeful got the honor of introducing the show saying, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night.”
Back in December, Haley was asked during a New Hampshire town hall what the reason was for the Civil War in the U.S. but never mentioned the word slavery in her response.
“I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run — the freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” was part of Haley’s response.
After backlash, Haley walked back her comments during an interview on the Good Morning New Hampshire radio show, saying, “Of course, the Civil War was about slavery.”
She added, “What it means to us today is about freedom — that’s what that was all about. It was about individual freedom,” she said. “It was about economic freedom. It was about individual rights.”
Haley then suggested the person who asked the question was a “plant” by Democrats “to do things like this to get the media to react.”
Although she didn’t provide evidence about the “plant” claim, she was asked if she actually thought the voter was a plant, she doubled down and said the New Hampshire voter was a “Democrat plant.”
